Joint Customs/GPHA/SOAAG Meeting

The opportunity was created for members to raise their concerns regarding the clearance process. The Commissioner of Customs, Mr Wallace Akondor accompanied by a high level team of customs officers as well as the Director of Tema Port, Mr. Jake Adokor and his team were on hand to respond to the concerns raised.

SOAAG Organizes one day workshop for Operational / Release Managers.

As part of the campaign against container theft, a day’s workshop was organized by the SOAAG Secretariat in conjunction with the police for operations and release Managers so as to sharpen their due diligence skills. The idea is to develop best practice for staff involved in container management with the cardinal aim of minimizing the incidence of theft while at the same time providing the necessary trail to facilitate police investigations should it occur at all.

SOAAG Media Encounter

As a follow –up to the first interaction between SOAAG and the Press Corps in Tema , the second encounter was organized on the 18th March 2015 to offer the opportunity for the press to have more insight into the shipping industry. The event was chaired by Mr. Emmanuel Baidoo a maritime Specialist with the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industries,Honourable Murtala Mohammed as the Guest Speaker and the President of the GJA  as a special guest of Honour.

Meeting with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Roads and Transport

SOAAG was privileged to host some members of the committee at the Nick Hotel to discuss matters of mutual interest.

At the meeting a special presentation was delivered by Mr. Francis Mensah Aborampa on the operations of the Ship agent after which the parliamentarians sought clarification on various aspects of the shipping industry.

Launch of Campaign against Stealing of Containers

During the SOAAG/ MEDIA encounter took advantage of the opportunity to launch its campaign against stealing which was climaxed with a tape cutting ceremony to launch posters and TV clip. By the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industries , Honourable Murtala Mohammed who was the Guest Speaker for the occasion.

X’mas Activities

SOAAG represented by the Executive Secretary joined Customs Division in its end of year carols service. In another development, SOAAG lent its support to the Naval Wives Association during their carol festival to round off their activities for the year.

SOAAG participates in Homowo celebration of the people of Tema Manhean

As part of its corporate social responsibility, SOAAG was represented at the get-together organized by the Tema mantse to round off the Homowo festivities. The chief outlined his development plans for the local community so as to enhance the quality of life for the indigenous people. He laid great emphasis on education and appealed to the business community to partner with him to enable him achieve his objectives.

Meeting with Port Security Department

The Association held discussions with GPHA concerning the incidence of stowaway within the port. The port security gave a detailed presentation on the port’s effort to curb the menace which was giving it a bad name.. He indicated that the Port was in the process of installing a security mechanism that could monitor movement within the port which he believed would put the Port in a better position to control stowaway activities as well as other criminal deeds within the port.

He called on all stakeholders to join in the fight against the activities of stowaway by reporting any suspicious characters hovering around the berths.

First SOAAG/MEDIA ENCOUNTER

SOAAG deems it crucial to build bridges with the media by sensitizing its members them on what goes on within the shipping industry. To this effect the first interaction between SOAAG and the Press Corps in Tema was organized on 14 March, 2014 under the auspices of the President of the Association, Alhaji Asoma Banda who was represented by Mr. Ignatius Afrifa, a member of SOAAG. The special guest of honour for the occasion was the president of the Ghana Journalists Association , Mr. Affail Monney. The resource person was Mr. Adam Imoru Ayarna who gave the journalists an insight into the intricate details of shipping.

Interaction with the Metropolitan Chief Executive

As part of his duty tour on the assumption of office, the MCE of Tema held a meeting with members of SOAAG to outline his plans for the development of Tema . Members assured him of their utmost cooperation and took the opportunity to bring to his notice some of their difficulties especially concerning container theft . The police pledged their support to ensure that the culprits were brought to book.
